When it comes to promoting your business, your two basic options are indoor advertising and outdoor advertising. What are the differences between these two types of advertising? Which one makes sense for you? Keep reading to find out.
What Is Indoor Advertising?
Indoor advertising is a type of marketing where material like posters or digital boards are displayed in enclosed spaces such as:
- Vanity areas
- Restrooms
- Bars
- Restaurants
- Supermarkets
What Is Outdoor Advertising?
The term outdoor advertising, on the other hand, refers to media that is displayed in open spaces, be it in an urban or natural setting. Some examples of outdoor advertising include the following:
- Billboards
- Street furniture advertising
- Banners
- Vehicle wraps
- Storefront signs
The Difference Between Indoor Advertising and Outdoor Advertising
The most important difference between indoor and outdoor advertising is the environment where each type of advertising is displayed: enclosed spaces for indoor advertising, and open-air settings for outdoor advertising.
Another important difference is the basic purpose of indoor and outdoor advertising. Typically, outdoor advertising aims to draw the attention of passersby. Indoor advertising, on the other hand, is directed toward customers who are already inside an establishment.
Indoor Advertising or Outdoor Advertising?
The best part about the indoor advertising vs outdoor advertising debate is that you don’t have to choose one over the other.
In fact, both types of advertising complement each other. While outdoor advertising gets customers through the door, indoor advertising engages with them once they are inside an establishment.
Indoor marketing leverages a principle known as captive audience marketing, where messages are delivered to an audience that is already in a place where they have to stay for a couple a minutes or more (such as a restroom or vanity area).
Outdoor advertising, on the other hand, utilizes other techniques that emphasize visibility in open-air environments, where competition for the attention of an audience includes other advertising messages, but also the visual clutter found in most outdoor settings (buildings, cars, street signs, etc.)
The type of advertising you choose will depend upon your marketing needs. Ideally, you will be using both indoor and outdoor advertising as well as online advertising in a unique marketing mix tailored to the needs of your business
